A "Bert the Turtle says Duck and Cover" booklet created by the Federal Civil Defense Administration. The booklet features the fictional character Bert the Turtle who was created for the American civil defense film "Duck and Cover". Bert the Turtle was primarily disseminated to school children to teach them what to do in case of a nuclear bomb sent by the Soviet Union: seek shelter, duck, and cover. This booklet follows Bert the Turtle in various scenarios leading up to, during, and following a nuclear explosion. The booklet teaches children the importance of ducking to avoid debris flying through the air and covering to avoid getting injured or badly burnt by an explosion. The booklet mentions that while it is important to listen out for sirens and alarms that warn people of an incoming threat, a bomb could come without warning.
