The White-Haired Girl was one of the original eight model performances that were created by Jiang Qing in the early 1960s and widely disseminated across the nation during the Cultural Revolution. Theatre and dance troupes performed the ballet in the countryside, and the storyline was disseminated through books, posters, and comics. A film version of the ballet was eventually created in 1972. The White-Haired Girl tells the story of the peasant girl Yang Xi'er, who escapes an abusive landlord and hides in the mountains. Due to her ordeal, her hair turns white. Eventually, she gets her revenge against the evil landlord and the region is liberated by the Communist Eighth Route Army. Xi'er, who has been separated from her fiance Dachun, is reunited with him, as he has joined the Communist Army.
