This is a famous peasant painting from the Huxian region. During the Cultural Revolution, Mao encouraged peasants, to make works of art in order to highlight the genius of the masses and works by peasant amateur artists were disseminated as posters. However, in reality, many amateur artists had help from professional artists who were sent out to the countryside. This work, depicting an abundance of fish, emphasizes the bountiful living conditions in the countryside under the Chinese Communist Party. This work, with captions in English, French and German, was intended for export. Huxian peasant paintings were especially popular among Western audiences.
