USSR in Construction issue No.5 from May, 1937. USSR in Construction was a landmark Soviet art magazine, issued from 1930 to 1941 to celebrate the achievements of the first two Five Year Plans and (through various foreign-language editions) to propagandize the stark contrast between the vibrant Soviet economy during this period and the stagnation of Western economies under capitalism. It was published in Moscow by the State Publishing House of Graphic Arts in 1937. Kossarev, A. was the editor-in-chief and Alexander Rodchenko and Barbara Stepanova led design. The front cover features a tower of neatly stacked gold bars on a black background with the magazine logo in the top left and the issue and date in the bottom left. The back cover is red and includes the year in the top right and the publishing information in black on the left side. The theme of the present issue is dedicated entirely to the production of Gold in the USSR, detailing the rise of production from pre-revolutionary Russia (1910) through 1937, when Russia ranked second in the world due to their industrial machinery, superior engineering, and large working populace. In addition to equipment and economics, this issue includes information on the culture and daily life of mining families. There is minor wear and a few creases to spine fold and extremities, with dustiness to rear wrapper.
