SUMMARY:Summer Camp at the Stevie: Watercolor & Other Media with Anne Pearce
DESCRIPTION:Slow down this July at Summer Camp at the Stevie: hands-on art workshops in a lush Culver City oasis. Teens and adults welcome.\n\n\nSummer Camp at the Stevie \nJoin us this July for Summer Camp at the Stevie\, a hands-on art making series situated in a lush oasis in the middle of Culver City. Across four weekends\, adults and teens are invited to slow down and reconnect with the natural world through workshops led by renowned local artists. Workshops will include watercolor\, incense making\, weaving with foraged materials\, and natural dyeing. Together\, we will cultivate a sense of awe for the quiet power and beauty of plants. \nWhether you’re channeling your inner artist or just looking for a mindful escape\, each session offers a nod to summer camp nostalgia. Each weekend features two different sessions. Participants may register for one or both\, except for the incense-making workshop\, which is a two-day experience and requires attendance on both days. \nWhat is the Stevie? \nTucked away on the southwestern side of the Glorya Kaufman Community Center\, the Stevie is a “tiny house” turned creative outpost. Surrounded by palms and desert landscaping\, it serves as both an artist residency space and an intimate venue for programs\, gatherings\, and experimental events on its expansive outdoor deck. The Stevie was made possible by a transformative contribution from Steve and Jadwiga Markoff. \nWatercolor & Other Media with Anne Pearce \nJuly 5 & 6\, 10:30 am – 1:00 pm \nRooted in keen observation and emotional resonance\, Anne Pearce’s layered\, intuitive works on paper explore the rhythm of nature and the unseen worlds it evokes. In this workshop\, Pearce invites participants to slow down and engage deeply with their surroundings\, translating the beauty of the natural world into pools of pigment\, iridescent marks\, and contemplative linework. Pearce’s approach blends spontaneity with precision—guiding others to create work that reflects not just what we see\, but how we feel. \nAbout the Artist: Anne Austin Pearce studied printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute\, Brighton Polytechnic and the University of Kansas. In 1993\, Pearce received a full scholarship to James Madison University\, where she received her MFA in drawing and painting. A recipient of a Charlotte Street Award\, she has participated in multiple national and international residencies including Space Department\, Nara\, Japan\, UCROSS Foundation\, Wyoming\, Draw International\, Caylus\, France\, Rimbun Dahan\, KL Malaysia\, pARTage\, Flic en Flac\, Mauritius and Akumal Mexico. Pearce will be participating in an artist residency at the Space Department\, Japan in May of 2025. She has been included in various group exhibitions such as the Founders Gallery at Soka University in Aliso Viejo\, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art in Springfield\, MO\, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park\, KS\, Shore Institute for Contemporary Art at the Corcoran School of Art and Design in Washington DC; and the Drawing Center in New York. Pearce’s work is held in international private collections and museum collections including Tucson Museum of Art\, Spencer Museum of Art\, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art\, Miami Dade College Museum of Art.

SUMMARY:Wende Museum Meditations with Christiane Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for weekly mindfulness meditations. All are welcome\, regardless of experience level.\n\n\nNote: Our weekly mindfulness sessions will be taking a break for the summer\, the final program will be on July 2. It will resume in September. \nJoin us for our weekly mindfulness meditations. Whether you are new to meditation or already have experience we welcome you to this community sit in the beautiful garden of the Wende Museum. \nYou do not have to join all sessions but can join as your schedule allows. \nWhat is mindfulness? Mindfulness is being fully present to your life instead of being on autopilot. Our mind tends to rehash the past and to rehearse the future. There is nothing wrong with that except that it does it too much and it keeps us from being with what is actually happening right in this moment. We can feel like life is passing us by and we miss a lot of good moments with family and friends\, in nature and just throughout the day. When we are present we become better listeners and observers and will make better choices\, big and small. People who regularly practice mindfulness meditation report overall stress levels going down and being able to deal with whatever comes their way in a better\, healthier way. They also feel more connected and more joyful. \nWe practice this through mindfulness meditation where we train the mind to stay with an anchor\, like the sensations of the breath. Eventually the mind will calm down and so will the body. We learn tools to be with a busy mind\, challenging emotions\, and even physical pain. We can access peace\, calm and joy that arises independently of what’s going on in our lives at this time. \nTeacher Bio: \nChristiane Wolf is an internationally known mindfulness and Insight (Vipassana) meditation teacher. Originally from Berlin\, Germany\, she is a longtime proud resident of Culver City where her three children attended (or still attend) CCMS and CCHS. \nChristiane was trained as an OB/GYN in Germany but pivoted to not only practicing mindfulness meditation but then teaching it\, mainly through InsightLA. \nShe was trained and mentored by Trudy Goodman\, Jack Kornfield\, Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Gil Fronsdal \nand others. \nChristiane is the author of Outsmart Your Pain – Mindfulness and Self-Compassion to Help You Leave Chronic Pain Behind and the coauthor of A Clinician’s Guide to Teaching Mindfulness\, a classic training manual for mindfulness teachers. \nCheck www.christianewolf.com for more info. \nAn ADA-accessible entrance to the Glorya Kaufman Community Center is available through the gate from the parking lot at 10858 Culver Blvd.

SUMMARY:Samizdat Sundays and Other Subversions
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on series of textile-based workshops inspired by the Soviet Hippie Collection and other dissident archives at the Wende Museum.\n\n\nRooted in the rebellious spirit of DIY and “making do\,” Samizdat Sundays and Other Subversions invites participants of all ages to gather together to repair\, reclaim\, and create. Inspired by the Soviet Hippie Collection and other dissident archives at the Wende Museum\, this hands-on series of workshops led by artist Kate Ingold offers an opportunity to make a new “imaginary elsewhere” through wearable art and textile materials. \nEach session\, we will explore themes of personal and collective freedom\, expression\, and identity. Workshops include: \nWave your freak flag high: Create flags and banners for imaginary countries \nFrom straight to wide: Convert straight pants into bell bottoms \nPack light: Deconstruct old T-shirts and turn them into shopping bags \nMake it invisible: Sew secret messages into your favorite textiles\, for yourself or others \nPatch it up: Create unique\, hand-sewn patches to use for necessity or identity \nStory of Today: Embroider bandanas or make a fabric journal to tell the story of your experience in our present time \nJoin us for Sundays of stitching and subversion—no experience necessary\, just a willingness to imagine\, mend\, and make with intention. \nAbout the teaching artistKate Ingold is an LA-based artist and poet working with the discarded\, the damaged\, and the worn out. Materials and methods include textiles\, collage\, photography\, video\, ceramics\, and performative installation. She works in series driven by conceptual concerns and is currently making work in two interwoven projects: Relics for Future Rituals and Damaged Goods/Small Repairs. \nRSVPs for this free program do not guarantee admission.

SUMMARY:Wende Museum Meditations with Christiane Wolf
DESCRIPTION:Join us for weekly mindfulness meditations. All are welcome\, regardless of experience level.\n\n\nJoin us for our new weekly mindfulness meditations.
